Dear Council and Chapter Presidents:
Today’s edition of USA Today includes a USA Today opinion column saying military retirees have too good a deal on their TRICARE benefits. MOAA’s president, VADM Norb Ryan, Jr. USN Ret responded with an opposing view which USA Today included in today’s issue. You can see the opinion column at:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2011-06-01-Militarys-Tricare-benefits-too-sweet-a-deal_n.htm
and VADM Ryan’s opposing view at: http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2011-06-01-Troops-already-sacrificed-for-health-care-benefits_n.htm .
The fact that we were asked to submit an opposing view by a major newspaper and have it published is an indication of the access and influence MOAA has in any serious discussion of military benefits. This access comes in part from the actions of our councils and chapters in carrying out the grass roots support role of our chapter system.
We wanted to be sure you had an opportunity to see this exchange as a sample of what we can expect in the months ahead as the debate on spending cuts continues here in Washington. These are indeed tough and challenging times and we need to do our best to ensure situational awareness of our chapter members so we can “weigh in” when it’s time. We hope you will forward this message to as many of your members as possible.
Thanks for all you do.
